Summary

"A bravura performance by one of our finest writers。"--The Horn Book (starred review)

"This series finale has everything readers could hope for from a conclusion 20 years in the making。"-- School Library Journal (starred review)

The thrilling, twenty-years-in-the-making conclusion to the New York Times-bestselling Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner。 The epic novels set in the world of the Queen's Thief can be read in any order。

This beloved and award-winning series began with the acclaimed novel The Thief。 It and four more stand-alone volumes bring to life a world of epics, myths, and legends, and feature one of the most charismatic and incorrigible characters of fiction, Eugenides the thief。 Now more powerful and cunning than ever before, Eugenides must navigate a perilous future in this sweeping conclusion。 Perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu, Patrick Rothfuss, and Sarah J。 Maas。

Neither accepted nor beloved, Eugenides is the uneasy linchpin of a truce on the Lesser Peninsula, where he has risen to be high king of Attolia, Eddis, and Sounis。 As the treacherous Baron Erondites schemes anew and a prophecy appears to foretell the death of the king, the ruthless Mede empire prepares to strike。

The New York Times-bestselling Queen's Thief novels are rich with political machinations, divine intervention, dangerous journeys, battles lost and won, power, passion, and deception。 Features a cast list of the characters in the Queen's Thief novels, as well as two maps--a map of the world of the Queen's Thief, and a map exclusive to this edition。

"The Queen's Thief books awe and inspire me。 They have the feel of a secret, discovered history of real but forgotten lands。 The plot-craft is peerless, the revelations stunning, and the characters flawed, cunning, heartbreaking, exceptional。 Megan Whalen Turner's books have a permanent spot on my favorites shelf, with space waiting for more books to come。"--Laini Taylor, New York Times-bestselling author of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone novels and Strange the Dreamer

Unforgettable characters, plot twists that will make your head spin, a world rendered in elegant detail--you will fall in love with every page of these stories。 Megan Whalen Turner writes vivid, immersive, heartbreaking fantasy that will leave you desperate to return to Attolia again and again。--Leigh Bardugo, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom

Megan Whalen Turner has constructed a clever world filled with suspense and intrigue and characters that will never be forgotten。 Once you dive into the world of the Queen's Thief, prepare to have your life stolen from you until you finish them all。 --Joelle Charbonneau, New York Times-bestselling author of the Testing trilogy

"Megan Whalen Turner's Queen's Thief books are like the characters she creates: endlessly entertaining, deeply deceptive, and very, very clever。"--Garth Nix, New York Times-bestselling and award-winning author of the Old Kingdom, Keys to the Kingdom, and Seventh Tower series

i'm sitting here trying to write a review that sums up the perfection of this final book and this series but unfortunately my head is empty and i have no thoughts。 or maybe the real problem is i have so many thoughts and it's hard to articulate what an amazing conclusion this was in a coherent way。I will miss these characters and this world so much, and all i gotta say is I hope disney doesn't mess up the adaptation or else I could possibly most definitely cry (but I will also cry seeing it brou i'm sitting here trying to write a review that sums up the perfection of this final book and this series but unfortunately my head is empty and i have no thoughts。 or maybe the real problem is i have so many thoughts and it's hard to articulate what an amazing conclusion this was in a coherent way。I will miss these characters and this world so much, and all i gotta say is I hope disney doesn't mess up the adaptation or else I could possibly most definitely cry (but I will also cry seeing it brought to life regardless so I guess it doesn't really matter) 。。。more

It's a strong 4。5, and don't think for a moment I didn't enjoy and savor this book。 I would still love to see another series after the end of this one but that's because I love the world and Turner's writing。 It's a strong 4。5, and don't think for a moment I didn't enjoy and savor this book。 I would still love to see another series after the end of this one but that's because I love the world and Turner's writing。 。。。more

Roughly around 4。5 to be honest, but nostalgia makes me round up。

This was a solid ending to the series。 #5 had me worried for a minute but #6 brought everything together and Gen is at the center, although not from his POV。 It will definitely a series I will re-read many times over!

fuck man。 i don't know, i've been reading this series since i was eleven。 it doesn't feel right or possible that it's over。 that i'll never read another queen's thief book and be surprised。 it doesn't diminish my love for them。 on the contrary, they're unbearably dear to me。 but i think i'm going to be sad for a while before i come to grips with the fact that it's over。 fuck man。 i don't know, i've been reading this series since i was eleven。 it doesn't feel right or possible that it's over。 that i'll never read another queen's thief book and be surprised。 it doesn't diminish my love for them。 on the contrary, they're unbearably dear to me。 but i think i'm going to be sad for a while before i come to grips with the fact that it's over。 。。。more

I’m genuinely sad that this series is over。 I highly recommend reading them for yourself。 The author has created a mythology that feels far more vast and historical than what appears on the pages。 The characters are rich and fun to watch over the course of the series。

For a long time, I've managed to avoid every kind of spoiler about this book by sheer virtue of will (and a few muted words on Twitter)。 I'm so happy that I did, because reading through this final book properly after having spent the last month rereading the books before it has been one of the most wonderful experiences of the year。 To see all of the pieces of the plot that were put into motion nearly twenty five years ago finally fall into their rightful places was nothing short of breathtaking For a long time, I've managed to avoid every kind of spoiler about this book by sheer virtue of will (and a few muted words on Twitter)。 I'm so happy that I did, because reading through this final book properly after having spent the last month rereading the books before it has been one of the most wonderful experiences of the year。 To see all of the pieces of the plot that were put into motion nearly twenty five years ago finally fall into their rightful places was nothing short of breathtaking! Megan Whalen Turner is a master of her craft, and Return of the Thief couldn't have presented a more perfect conclusion to the perils of the peninsula。 CW: ableist insults, mentions of miscarriage, and a brief, explicit description of torture。 REP: non-speaking, amputee MC, bisexual SC, and gay SC。 PROS:- The contention between fate and will。 The fact that these books so indomitably prove is that it is incredibly difficult to weave a tale where every piece falls conveniently into place without allowing it to appear as if this is the case only because a book is written by an author。 Although there are plenty of "conveniences" that dot the progression of The Queen's Thief narrative, especially in this book, those conveniences are a well-earned conclusion to threads planted years ago and as such appear entirely believable。 Admittedly, I did have some doubts as to how cleanly certain things worked out towards the end of Thick as Thieves, but Return of the Thief banished those doubts with ease in its meticulous attention to detail and recollection。 There's a line towards the end, "Only two threads brought together。 Two threads that touched。 Nothing more than that, and everything else left up to you。" No other line could so aptly summarize the thesis of the series: that the gods do move their pieces into place, but the culminations of such moves lie entirely in the hands of the people who choose to act on them。 It's a wonderful take on the everlasting debate within mythology as to whether the existence of gods subsequently implies a lack of human agency, and I love every thread in the series used to explore it。 - Eugenides's fallibility as a king。 A great portion of the series has spent its time driving home the fact that Eugenides is a king unparalleled: a master not only of thievery but of strategy, manipulation, loyalty, and empathy。 In his pursuits to save Irene, win favor with Costis, teach Sophos, and befriend Kamet, the image of a perfect and deserving king is built, his handful of faults only meant to be dealt with on the occasions they come to a head。 It's apt, then, for the final book to take a somewhat reversed approach。 Pheris, as the young heir to the traitorous House Erondites, spends the book desperate to prove himself to Eugenides after a near-fatal misstep, and, in the end, his love and devotion for the latter allow him to spare Eugenides of the cruelty that he might have succumbed to in the pursuit of his own rage and anguish。 Although Eugenides is a king of kings with many weights resting on his shoulders, Pheris does not allow him to forget his own humanity and capacity for mercy。 It's a beautiful illustration of the ruinous pressure that the power of rule can impose on anyone, and how the people who devote themselves to their rulers are truly the ones most capable of reminding them of their true self。 - The microrelationships。 A truly wondrous part of Turner's world-building process is the ways in which she brings together different people; there is, once again, a certain convenience about some of these relationships that is simultaneously never too overstated or forced, and it builds an all-the-more realistic picture of the complex machinations of court。 The relationships that Pheris fosters with every person in this book are not only critical to how the plot moves forward but also derive a deep sense of satisfaction as the reader watches his world evolve and expand where before it was restricted to a small, lonely, and cruel existence。 I particularly adored being privy to his building friendships with Teleus and Relius。 - Gen and Irene, inventors of romance! After missing the drama of this pair's treacherous love affair for the last two books, getting to see it return in full force for the series' conclusion was exhilarating。 The perils and agony of their journeys, whether as individuals or as spouses, are truly entrenched in the fabric of the entire series and lie at its heart。 A king and a queen so sequestered in the need to feel useful to their people that they would drive themselves into the misery of hard-handed rule, finding and bettering each other after their threads were brought together by the gods! It's the magnum opus of Turner's master crafting as the voice of the gods in her stories。 The extra story at the end about Alita's earring, and Eugenides's heart's desire, and Irene twirling for Eugenides in her purple gown, brought tears to my eyes。 "Only two threads brought together。 Two threads that touched。 Nothing more than that, and everything else left up to you。" A gorgeous, breathtaking encapsulation of love。 CONS:- I don't want it to end。 FINAL RATING: 5 。。。more

Much better than the previous two books! This one had a few fun moments that featured Eugenides, but it still never quite got back up to the pacing and tone from books 1-3。 I honestly can't picture a better ending though。 Definitely fun and, on the whole, this series has become one of my favorites! A satisfying end to the series, I feel。 I'm down for the disabled representation, and for actual not-merely-hinted-at queer pairing。 (view spoiler)[which could have gone down the 'kill your gays' route but didn't so dodged that bullet (hide spoiler)]Ultimately I think the first three books will always be my favourites, since I keep going back to them, but I'm not disappointed by this last installment。 A satisfying end to the series, I feel。 I'm down for the disabled representation, and for actual not-merely-hinted-at queer pairing。 (view spoiler)[which could have gone down the 'kill your gays' route but didn't so dodged that bullet (hide spoiler)]Ultimately I think the first three books will always be my favourites, since I keep going back to them, but I'm not disappointed by this last installment。 。。。more

The conclusion brought together or back so many characters and plot points, it was difficult to follow or remember such a lot。 However the main story, of the love of the Thief and the Queen of Attolia, and the difficulties of politics in the kingdoms, including war looming, carried me through。 The Thief is such an appealing character too -- this made me want to go back to the beginning。。。

What a great ending to the series!Gen is such a multifaceted character but we saw a little of all of him, even of Book 1 Gen。It wasn't a perfect ending but it was a needed one, especially with the politics involving, the entire world built was complex enough。I loved MWT's writing!!! A satisfying conclusion to a series I didn’t want to end。 Eugenties (aka Gen, The Queens Thief, The High King) is one of my favorite characters I’ve encountered in a very long time。 I could continue reading about him for many more volumes, but if I can’t, this is a high note to say goodbye on。

We follow the story of Pheris, one of the sons of Erondites who has become heir, through a mix of scheming and accident。 Pheris is impaired (never made clear really, but he has twisted limbs and cannot speak) and has always pretended to be mentally impaired as well。 However he is packed off to be one of the new High King's attendants by his grandfather (who is anti-Eugenides)。 Supposedly after burning up all the Medean fleet everyone is safe, but the Kings and Queens Know Better。 The story of th We follow the story of Pheris, one of the sons of Erondites who has become heir, through a mix of scheming and accident。 Pheris is impaired (never made clear really, but he has twisted limbs and cannot speak) and has always pretended to be mentally impaired as well。 However he is packed off to be one of the new High King's attendants by his grandfather (who is anti-Eugenides)。 Supposedly after burning up all the Medean fleet everyone is safe, but the Kings and Queens Know Better。 The story of the Little Peninsula comes to an end--at least for this generation--and I really can't say much of anything without spoiling, but there is some ferocious fighting and long overdue come-uppance-getting as well as some surprises。 Loved this series! A lovely conclusion to this wonderful series。 The characters, setting, and lore are as fascinating as ever even as Turner brings them to a satisfying end of her tale。In every review after the original novel I've voiced my regret that the series didn't follow a more fantastical path - and a part of me still feels that way - but in this book Turner has managed to follow through on both the political and fantasy themes of the series in a really enjoyable way。I won't forget these characters any time A lovely conclusion to this wonderful series。 The characters, setting, and lore are as fascinating as ever even as Turner brings them to a satisfying end of her tale。In every review after the original novel I've voiced my regret that the series didn't follow a more fantastical path - and a part of me still feels that way - but in this book Turner has managed to follow through on both the political and fantasy themes of the series in a really enjoyable way。I won't forget these characters any time soon, and I *hope* this isn't the very end of Turner writing in this world。 。。。more

I’m having a hard time pinpointing exactly what I didn’t like about this book…probably because I read the first 5 books in the series at least 3 or 4 years ago so my memory of the plot, writing, characters, etc is fuzzy。 I was definitely entertained。 It’s a good story and a satisfying ending to the series。 Pheris provided an interesting point of view as the narrator。 I think my biggest disappointment was that the title promised the “Return of the Thief,” and yet, as in many of the other books, I I’m having a hard time pinpointing exactly what I didn’t like about this book…probably because I read the first 5 books in the series at least 3 or 4 years ago so my memory of the plot, writing, characters, etc is fuzzy。 I was definitely entertained。 It’s a good story and a satisfying ending to the series。 Pheris provided an interesting point of view as the narrator。 I think my biggest disappointment was that the title promised the “Return of the Thief,” and yet, as in many of the other books, I only caught glimpses of the Thief。 Book 1 was easily my favorite in the series, mostly because of Gen, and I was hoping to see a lot more of that Gen in this book, given the title。 My favorite moments in all of the books have been when Gen shows his cunning and foresight, surprising the reader by how much he’s been in control all along。 I got a few moments like that in this book but I was hoping for a lot more。 I also struggled a little with the writing。 I felt like nothing was ever straightforward or clearly explained。 The meaning behind everything was left obscure and so a lot of the time I was scratching my head, wondering what the heck peeps were talking about or implying。 。。。more

Amazing。 What an amazing close to an amazing series。 Another new character, with an entirely fresh perspective in many ways。 I loved watching Gen see the potential in this new character and interact with him。 I’m very sad to have ended this series, so I guess I’ll have to re read it。

Really enjoyed the perspective of Pheris as he tells what might be the concluding story of Gen the Thief of Eddis。 Really fun series, I re-read them all in preparation to finish。

Perhaps my favorite book in the series, and a fantastic capstone。 Brilliantly written with a focus on the characters, while the politics of the peninsula come to a head。 I adore the main narrator for this series, and I appreciate the varied ability levels of characters depicted through the series。

I liked the new narrator, disliked so much more war compared to previous books。 I also noticed that there is no foreshadowing, so the author can just make people pregnant whenever she wants。
